We have been on some adventures of the last couple blogs. These dealt with the medieval faires that I have attended so far this year. Now we return to my novel writing.
As many of you readers know, I am the author of "Legend of the Mystic Knights" a tale told in an alternate medieval history. The concept of my novel is that earth is besieged with evil monsters and as a result the middle ages never ended.
For those of you, who have not read my novel, WHY NOT?, but here is my summery until you get your copy and read it.
In 1100 AD a priest is sent to destroy an ancient book that contains spells that could cause hell on earth. Jump 1,000 years (TODAY) and a knight is leaving a battle field where a skirmish has been fought against an army of evil creatures.
The knight, Sir Percival, is on a mission to find the child of his close friends who have died. He is attacked by a zombie-like creature called revenant, but is saved by a young man. This young man is named William, and he is the person the knight has been looking for.
William is told that his parents belonged to the Mystic Knights of the Dead Killers, and order dedicated to removing the evil from the world. Sir Percival has come to take William to the Baden Castle to be trained as a page, and hopefully someday to become a knight.
At the school, William is befriended by Scarlet, a girl whom he is attracted to. His other friend is Theodore, who is from a poor family but is also being trained at the school. William also has a nemesis, named Antanas, who enjoys picking on other students such as William and Theodore.
William is depressed about attending the knight’s school; he believes he does not belong there. He is on the verge of sneaking out when Sir Percival intervenes. William is finally told about his parents exploits as knights, and how great they were in combat. With this knowledge, William becomes more confident and begins to excel at his studies and duties.
Although William was told of his parent’s deeds, there is other information he was not told. There is a prophecy about William, that he may be the one who will drive the evil from the world.
Ampethere dragons (snake like flying dragon) attack the school, and many are killed, including William’s friend Theodore. William vows to learn as much as he can, to become the perfect knight, so he can destroy as many of the evil creatures as he can.
After the aftermath of the dragon attack, many squires are sent out to help repair the village. William and the other squires are assigned to different trade’s people. Not only are they helping with repairs, but they also learn about numerous talents that each of these craftspeople possesses.
When all the repairs are completed a great faire is held. At the faire, William has to confront Atanas in competition with wooden swords.
This is where I will end my story, so I do not spoil any of the parts of the novel for those if you who have not read it yet (HINT,HINT). There are many more trials and conflicts the young page must go through, and many more unique creatures and monsters featured throughout the book. If I have whet your appetite for the novel, and are interested in purchasing it for your kindle, go here.
As for my sequel, here is what will happen.
William our protagonist: Now a little older, and is more mature. His relationship with Scarlet begins to blossom.
Now a squire, William has more duties and trials assigned to him. In a quest, he must face a terrifying ordeal that may cost him his life. I will admit I am a big fan of Kurt Vonnegut and one of his quotes about writing is, “Be a Sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them—in order that the reader may see what they are made of.” I will confess I do this will my lead character.
The order of the Mystic Knights will also be going on new adventures to different parts of Helvetia (Switzerland). The city of Basel will be prominent in the sequel. One of my favorite parts of the city is the Spalen Gate, which is one of the gates on the city wall.
Monsters: As a fantasy novel, I have included several new monsters and mythical creatures in my novel, as always I based my creatures on those that were believed to be real in medieval times.
Dragonets- These are small dragons, although lacking in size, they are still deadly, including having poison blood.
Gigas Lucernta- This means giant lizard. This large monster is an unstoppable force that attacks the castle.
Ogres- A standard in fantasy novels. My description of them is that of a traditional monster, and not the cartoon characters we see today.
Revenants- They appear briefly in “Legend of the Mystic Knights”; in the sequel, they play a prominent part in the story. A revenant is a medieval version of a zombie.
Warg- Some people believe this is a monster created by Tolkien, but in fact was “re-introduced” by him. In fact, wargs are legendary wolves from Norse mythology.
Witches- Although mentioned numerous times in my first novel, I now feature a witch in the sequel.
Woodwose- A large beast like humanoid, similar to our Bigfoot.
Wyvern- A flying dragon with one set of legs.
I hope you have enjoyed a glimpse into the sequel to the Legend of the Mystic Knights. In the future, as I did with the original, I will make illustrations of the monsters and creatures in my upcoming novel. I will notify you here when it is finished and published.
This weekend I will be attending the Krebashia Kingdom Medieval Fantasy Faire (weather permitting) in Malone, NY. Next week, my blog will be about that faire.
Good luck with the sequel, William. You really do have some pretty awful characters in the novel - let's just hope that William is able to overcome them.
